About Tuthilltown and Gardiner, NY |
|
Until the railroad was constructed in the 1870's, Tuthilltown was the commercial, cultural and social center of the town now called Gardiner.
For over 190 years, Albany Post Road was the main route from New York City to the Capitol.
Tuthilltown is now a quiet hamlet, as most of the commerce is now located a few miles to the east in the center of Gardiner. |

The south side of the home has a bow window, which brings lots of sunshine into the dining room. There is a patio area to the left for private outdoor enjoyment. The grapevine bears fruit! |

A metal gate leads to steps that take you down the bank to a stone outcrop over the Shawangunk Kill.
 |
The original hand pump is located on the patio, just steps from the kitchen door. Of course there is now a drilled well for your drinking water.

An additional seating area surrounded by perennial plants
looks out to the south yard (pictured below). The south yard is shaded by a large willow tree, and is completely surrounded by mature vegetation for further privacy. The Shawangunk Kill forms the west border of the property.

|
|
The Shawangunk Kill is a stream that flows northward through Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties. It is the largest tributary of the Wallkill River.
It takes its name from the neighboring Shawangunk Ridge, where it rises in the Town of Greenville (Orange County), then flowing down into the valley. Just north of this home, it curves due east and joins the Wallkill just south of Route 44/55.

Walking around the rear of the home, we come to the 2 car garage. One side has been closed up but can easily be re-opened.
The drive is gravel that has grown over with grass.
To the right of the garage is the north lawn (below). Again, mature trees provide privacy.
The north side of the home (below right) has a stained glass window (the rightmost one). A mature lilac (left) blooms in spring. |

The front entrance leads into a foyer, featuring a gracefully curved stairwell. The original ornate spindles and newel post are present. There is an alcove in the wall.

|
|
Immediately to the left of the foyer is the front parlor, the modern-day living room. It features a bow window with beautiful trim, facing the road. Picture molding frames the room. The ceilings are high, approximately nine feet. There are wide board floors throughout the home. |
The fireplaces have been closed up. At one time there were coal stoves; one in the front parlor and another on the other side of the wall, in the dining room. The dining room is just behind the front parlor. |
| |
|
The dining room can be entered from the front parlor, the foyer, the study, and the kitchen.

Another graceful bow window looks out toward the patio and south lawn, and brings sunshine into this room. |
The country kitchen is at the rear of the house. There's plenty of room for an informal dining area. The door with the curtain goes out to the patio, and there is a built-in cabinet to the right of it.
The door next to the refrigerator leads to a full bath with a shower stall and hookups for a stackable washer and dryer (they are not present).
A propane gas stove, dishwasher and refrigerator are included with the sale.
(Below) the closed door with items hanging on it goes to the basement; the other door is to the "back stairs" to the second floor. |

The Study, straight back from the front entrance and beside the dining room, offers a quiet place to work or to read. (below) The window behind the desk opens to the back of the property, and Shawangunk Kill. At right, the window looks out to the south yard, and the door is to a closet under the stairwell. Not pictured is a built-in cabinet, to the left of the desk.
